Cowboy Bebop Review
Not a bad representation of the anime, but not a great source of storytelling.
Starting a with the cons. It’s understood that this would not be a 1:1 of the anime’s source material, however you still get this awkward cosplay vibe that cheapens the essence of the cowboy bebop universe. This is much where live-action anime adaptations have trouble with the transition. It seems directors and visionaries think keeping it a bit cartoony will please the majority of fans for the anime, but this is (usually) far from the truth.
Storytelling has also been a major lack in Hollywood these days. However, with the release of so many amazing Netflix shows, you would think a western/eastern fused space-western could be molded into something epic and intriguing. After the first couple episodes you find yourself lacking in mystery with more detail of villainous characters having more screen time and more backstory to cheapen the character.
This is, sadly, the case with our main antagonist Vicious. In the source material he is mysterious, hiding in the shadows, and is meticulous with each action against the syndicate. During Netflix’s rendition he’s portrayed as open, scared, and not mysterious at all. Actions within the show are given too literally, which takes away from the aura.
